Should employees use mobile devices and computers at work?

are not very strict when it comes to employees listening to their portable media players while at work. Employers also do not mind employees making personal phone calls as long as they are making the calls using their own mobile phones. Other employers actually do not mind employees making personal phone calls using the company's phone. A few employers allow employees to plug personally owned computers into the company network. Some people say that employees should be allowed as long as the employer implements security measures . They claim that it is not possible to prevent employees from bringing mini portable media players and for that reason, the company should expect any outcome. Many companies have now resorted to close and critical examination on such practices . They claim that the devices make the stealing of data inevitable as the devices can be joined to workplace computers and backups of fundamental company data made to the devices . Some employees have gone to the extent of confisticating employees computers and mobile devices if they are caught using them at the workplace. The rules have been found difficult to implement despite employers policies disallowing such devices.

  • Should employees be allowed to use their personal devices and computers at work, why or why not?
  • Is it even possible for employers to keep all personal electronics out of the office ?

  1. no because the call and internet cost will increase and also this will cost the business as a whole as employee's will tend to spend more time on their personal gains than that of the business.

  2. -employees should be allowed to use their personal devices and computers at work. this is because employers should know that at work employees are motivated by different means and this includes caring for their personal welfare.therefore by not allowing these workers to have a little bit of such freedom at work productivity can be compromised.
-yes it is possible although it is not a good thing to do.

  4. It is inevitable for employees to communicate with the outside world hence not allowing devices such as mobile phones is a crime against humanity for there might arise emergent situations that need the employees attention. However the use of other devices such as mp3 players is debatable considering the environment in which one works in. Some environments are boring and monotonous while others are exciting and very active and hence no need for other entertainment that might act as distractors.

  6. Okay so here is the thing, there is nothing wrong with computers and other helpful electronic devices in the company. The only issue is if these things are introduced and not well monitored so that indeed the employee doesn't misuse time. A company that allows for these things should develop or use a pre-made employee monitoring system whether through software or through physical methods. This system checks employee activity over the companies network. Therefore it is easy to flag people who are lagging or those who deserve an incentive of some sort. This system is helpful also to catch people in fraudulent activity over the company's network system. Fraudulent may be unauthorised transfers of funds or even data; there are people who trade company data and secrets. All this is important to save the company from unnecessary legal costs in the event of this happening (as customers of course will definitely sue) in addition to whatever the company has lost. And true, these gadgets are distractions and this is due to human nature, a person will tend to communicate with family relations or friends or run their own operations on company material instead of making the company money. This sometimes affects the employees mental state and this is why computers are sometimes not recommended in the home. A person may be in contact with home whilst in the office and receive bad news which will affect the operations at that time.
    I could go on hehe

  8. taking it from an ethical perspective, its not a crime to use my mobile phone to "keep in touch" however, my employer pays me for time-an employee has to respect that work ethic. During work time an employee must engage in work related business---of-course that doesn't mean an employee cant have a laugh or two by sending someone an instant chat (am just saying) it must not be at the expense of the work the employee has to do. Work responsibility comes first. As for using laptops, if it furthers the agenda of the firm then its a-okay. For personal use sch as sending a buddie a shout out or posting a picture on Facebook...could come as an 'added benefit'(just saying),,but the point is it must not distract an employee from his/her primary responsibility to the firm. Thats if there are no company laws regarding the matter of-course.
